Beyond the Basics

In the South African town of Soshanguve recently, the Minister in the Presidency, Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang spoke at two schools that educate learners with disabilities.  She urged the educators to move beyond teaching these children and teens basic skills and instead encouraging them to teach skills that will prepare them for fully functional, productive lives.

Dr Manto Tshabalala-Msimang "All children need to be exposed to reading and writing skills as well as the content of all eight learning areas," she said.  She went on to say that it is “important to teach learners pre-vocational skills such as communication skills, independent travelling, punctuality and self-discipline among others.”

This is encouraging news in the world of those with disabilities in South Africa where up until now the learners were mainly provided with skills development training in welding, wood work upholstery, bead work and gardening.  This will broaden their exposure to many aspects of their vocational and professional options.

This academic year, there were 276 learners at Medicos from Soshanguve and the surrounding areas.  They are exploring establishing a third school due to the long waitlist – another great sign of progress in opportunities for disabled learners in South Africa.
